Saturday’s game between Georgetown and Syracuse will bring a new beginning to an old rivalry. It will be the first time that Syracuse will be without Jim Boehiem and Georgetown will not have a coaching member that is not in the late John Thompson circle.
First year Syracuse head coach Adrian Autry will be coaching his first game against the Hoyas. Georgetown coach Ed Cooley is the new guy on the block and the Hoyas have improved with a 5-3 record and already has the team within reach of last season’s win total. Georgetown went a dismal 7-25 record last season under Patrick Ewing.
The Hoyas are led by Jayden Epps leads the team in scoring averaging 19.1 points per game and 4.5 assists per game. He is leading the team with 24 3-pointers. The other key players to watch is Dontrez Styles who is averaging 16.4 points per game and Ismael Massoud with 12.5 points per game.
Syracuse have a 6-3 record in Adrian Autry first season as head coach. The Orange are led by 6-foot-4 guard Judah Mintz. Mintz is averaging 19.6 points per game in which he leads the team. Also Chris Bell is an another key scorer for the Orange, averaging 14.0 points per game with a team high 28 3-pointers on the season.
The rivalry is not the golden era it once was, but it’s always a competitive game. It’s always great to keep the rivalry regardless of Syracuse playing in the ACC. This year it will be different on the coaching side, however you have two of the finest coaches that will lead their teams in the right direction.
Look for these teams to improve in the near future and in a few years we can once again we a top 25 matchup like it was back in the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s
