Arnold “A-Train” Bernard a 5-6 point guard from the Bronx New York was a problem in high school. He show no fear against the ferocious competition in the NYC. He was killing cats who were taller than him and drive to the hoop or break you down on offense.
The was the man on the Gauchos and was the leader of the squad back in 1987. He made his teammates better as well and get his teammates involved. On the Gauchos he played alongside with Darryl Reid, Jamal Walker, Lloyd Daniels, Johnathan Duck, Karlton Hines, Billy Singleton, and other standouts. In 1987, he was featured on the CBS Morning News that featured the Gauchos playing the Russian National Team in the opening of the Gauchos Gym in the South Bronx. He was interviewed by Charles Osgood. He help the Gauchos beat the Russian National Team.
In his first three years Bernard attended Truman High School in the Co-Op City area in the Bronx. In his freshman year at Truman he played for Steve Lappas and played behind Rod Strickland. In 1984, Truman won the PSAL City and State Championship.
In 1986, “A-Train” transferred to Our Savior Lutheran in the Bronx. At OSL he lead them to the 1986-87 New York State championship in which they beat CHSAA City Champion Molloy HS lead by Kenny Anderson, Ralph James, and Rob Werdann. He was named the MVP of the State Championship. In 1987 he was named to All City Team in the Daily News and New York Post.
Bernard attend San Jacinto College in Pasadena Texas in from 1987 to 1989. He joined Gauchos teammate Darryl Reid and they were 68-6 in their two years. Both transferred to Southwest Missouri St and Bernard 11.7 points per game and 7.2 assists per game. He graduated from Southwest Missouri State in 1991. He holds the record for most assists and steals in a season.
Arnold Bernard played with the Long Island Surf of the USBL. Then spend time playing with the Harlem Globetrotters for six seasons and the Harlem Wizards. Also played in the Entertainers Basketball Classic at Rucker Park.
We give “A- Train” his flowers for giving us a lot of fond memories. He was always go down with great performances in High School, Golden Hoops, Wheelchair Classic, Elmcor Super 8 at City College, and numerous events.
