Jerry “Ice” Reynolds a 6-8 guard – forward who can handle the rock, make some serious moves to the rim and can give you buckets. In 1981 he led Alexander Hamilton to the New York City PSAL Championship. In addition, he led Alexander Hamilton to a win over Ben Franklin in Philadelphia between the battle of the New York vs Philadelphia City Champions in front of a live audience on CBS Sports.
He averaged 28 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists and four blocked shots during his senior season. Reynolds was named All-America by Street & Smith and Converse. He earned the Wingate Award, given to the outstanding public school athlete in the New York City metropolitan area.
“Ice” was academically ineligible at Wisconsin and sat out his freshman year. Then transfer to LSU and played three season in which he was named All SEC. He went into the 1985 NBA Draft in his junior year. He was picked in the first round as the number 22 overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks.
Reynolds played three seasons with the Bucks before playing with the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1988-89 season. He averaged 6.3 points per game in three seasons in Milwaukee and 7.6 ppg. in his season with Seattle. Then he was selected in the 1989 NBA Expansion Draft by the Orlando Magic … Started the first game in Orlando Magic history on November 4, 1989. He spend three years in Orlando from 1989 to 1992 where he averaged 12.7 points per game.
He suffered a crushed disc in his neck in 1992 when Patrick Ewing landed on him in an attempt to block his shot in which it set him back in his NBA career. He played in Italy, Puerto Rico, the USBL, and CBA.
Jerry Reynolds put on some great performances in Brownsville and all over New York going up against the best of the best players in the NYC. He played for Brooklyn USA and got the nickname “Ice” due to playing like George Gervin.
Today he resides in Tampa, Florida and still is involved with the basketball community. “Ice” will always be a NYC hoop legend and thank you for the memories.
