After spending four seasons in Minnesota Josh Okogie sign with the Phoenix Suns as a free agent in 2022. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard show flashes that he that great defender that the Suns need.
Last night Okogie lead the Suns with 17 points (7-13 FG, 3-6 3Pt, 0-1 FT), six rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots in a 115-107 preseason loss to the Denver Nuggets. He saw 24 minutes of action in last night’s game.
Okogie won’t be much of a scorer, his defense will stand out the most. Most of the scoring will be depended on Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker. Okogie is athletic and physical with a 7-foot wingspan. He has the capabilities to be one of the best defensive players in the league.
Even with his 17 points in last night’s defeat, Okogie’s offense can use some work. He has averaged 6.6 points per game and 1.2 career assists. Also struggles beyond the arc as well. With him in the lineup and if Beal, Booker, or KD not playing you will see his offensive numbers go up as he will play a role.
Okogie, re-signed with the Suns for two years on a $5.7 million deal. Year two is a player option. I do see that mental toughness in him and I look for him to be in the lineup and see him going to step up. With new coach Frank Vogel who is still getting adjusted to the lineup, I believe he will like Okogie game.
I can see Josh Okogie thrive in a system and help his three star players having outstanding performances night in and night out. You can see a scrappy type of player that the fan base will appreciate. In addition, he will be an additional help on both end of the boards along with Jusif Nurkic who came along in the three way trade with Milwaukee and Portland.
With the great start that Josh Okogie had last night look forward to improving his minutes and stats from the last few seasons. Last season Okogie averaged 18.8 minutes, 7.3 points , 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.
