San Diego State’s 2024-25 season is witnessing the rise of redshirt sophomore Myles Byrd, a 6-foot-7 wing who has taken a significant leap in his game. After a developmental freshman year and a steady sophomore campaign, Byrd is now a key contributor for the Aztecs, showcasing his versatility on both ends of the floor.
This season, Byrd has made a major jump in efficiency, particularly from beyond the arc. He’s connecting on 39.5% of his three-point attempts, a drastic improvement from the 31.1% he shot last year. That shooting prowess has translated into increased production across the board—he’s averaging 15.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 steals per game, proving himself as a legitimate two-way threat.
Byrd’s journey to this breakout year has been years in the making. A four-star recruit out of Lincoln High School in Stockton, California, he was a standout performer, averaging 17 points and five rebounds per game while earning All-State honors from Cali High Sports. Byrd chose San Diego State over Washington, Minnesota, Colorado State, and Santa Clara, believing in the Aztecs’ strong developmental program.
His first collegiate season was short-lived due to an injury, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise—he played just four games during SDSU’s run to the National Championship game before being granted a medical redshirt. Last season, Byrd carved out a role off the bench in all 34 games, averaging four points and three rebounds per contest. His shooting, length, and flashes of playmaking ability hinted at his potential, but now he’s putting it all together.
Byrd’s long wingspan makes him a disruptive defensive presence, while his improved three-point shooting has made him a key offensive weapon. His ability to function as a secondary playmaker further adds to his value, allowing him to impact the game in multiple ways. With his continued growth, Byrd is not just a crucial piece for San Diego State—he’s emerging as one of the most improved players in the Mountain West and a name to watch beyond the college level.
As the season progresses, Byrd’s evolution will be a major storyline for the Aztecs. If he keeps up this level of play, he could position himself as an All-Conference performer and a potential pro prospect in the near future.
