Bernard and Albert King dominated the high school basketball scene from 1973 to 1981. The Kings attended Ft. Hamilton high school in Brooklyn and both became a force to be reckoned. You couldn’t tell which brother was the best.
Bernard a 6-foot-7 forward played at Ft Ham from 1970 to 1977 and Albert a 6-foot-6 forward who played from 1973 to 1977. Both played for coach Ken Kern. During that period Ft. Ham made the PSAL City playoffs.
Bernard was first team All-City in 1974 and became the school’s all time leading rebounder with 1560. Albert was a two time All – City in 1976 and 1977. In addition, he was named New York’s Mr Basketball and selected to the McDonald’s All-American team in 1977.
Bernard played at Tennessee in which he was first team All American in 1977 and three time SEC player of the year. Albert King played at Maryland under the legendary Lefty Driesell. He was ACC player of the year and second team All American.
Bother brothers played in the NBA for a combined 25 years. Also they were drafted by the Nets (Bernard in New York) & Albert in New Jersey). Bernard was a four time All Star and one of the Knicks most popular players of all time. Albert spend 8 years in the NBA with the New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, and San Antonio Spurs.
The King brothers had a legacy that will be remembered not only in New York, but worldwide. Today they are both acknowledged by colleagues and other fans when the game is talked about. Their younger brother Gerald King played at Ft Hamilton HS and had a excellent career and played at Hofstra.
