Golden State Valkyries Rising: Could a WNBA Finals Run Be Next?

The Golden State Valkyries are making a serious statement in their second season in the WNBA.

The Valkyries have climbed all the way to No. 2 in the WNBA standings, sitting just three games behind the Minnesota Lynx. And now, the two teams are set to face off Wednesday night at the Chase Center in what could be a major measuring-stick game for Golden State.

The Valkyries have put themselves in an excellent position for the postseason. They are already a game and a half ahead of the two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces, giving Golden State a strong advantage in the race for home-court positioning if the teams meet in the playoffs.

Defense Is Leading the Way

The biggest reason for Golden State’s success has been its defense.

The Valkyries are giving up only about 77 points per game, making them one of the toughest defensive teams in the league. Their ability to make opponents work for every basket has become a major part of their identity. But defense isn’t the only reason Golden State has reached a 24-9 record.

A Dynamic Backcourt

The Valkyries are being led by a terrific backcourt duo in Veronica Burton and Gabby Williams.

Burton has provided steady play and leadership, while Williams, who joined Golden State in free agency after playing for the Seattle Storm, has added another dynamic two-way presence. Together, they have helped give the Valkyries the defensive toughness, athleticism and versatility needed to compete with the WNBA’s best teams.

Could Golden State Be WNBA Finals Bound?

At this point, it is no longer a question of whether the Valkyries belong among the league’s elite.

They clearly do. The bigger question is just how far they can go. With a 24-9 record, an elite defense, a talented backcourt and home-court positioning in their favor, I would not be surprised to see the Golden State Valkyries playing for the WNBA championship in October.

Wednesday’s matchup with Minnesota at the Chase Center could provide another preview of what may be coming in the postseason.

The Valkyries aren’t just having a good season. They are starting to look like a championship contender.
