Mercury Keep Rolling with Statement Win Over Sparks

On Tuesday night, the Phoenix Mercury kept their momentum alive, leading from start to finish in a convincing 92–84 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. The Mercury controlled the pace early and never looked back, stretching their lead to as many as 16 points in the third quarter before cruising to the win.

With the loss, the Sparks slipped a game and a half behind in the race for the final playoff spot, while the Mercury tightened their grip on home-court advantage for the opening round, staying just ahead of the New York Liberty.

Phoenix once again showcased their depth with five players scoring in double figures. Satou Sabally led the way with 19 points, attacking the rim and controlling the tempo. Sami Whitcomb delivered a sharpshooting performance, knocking down five of seven from beyond the arc on her way to 17 points. That balance made it difficult for Los Angeles to mount any serious comeback.

While the Mercury’s offense powered the victory, the biggest storyline of the night belonged to Alyssa Thomas, who delivered another all-around masterpiece. Thomas recorded her seventh triple-double of the season, finishing with 12 points, 16 rebounds, and 15 assists.

With that performance, she broke the WNBA’s single-season record for triple-doubles, adding yet another milestone to her already historic year.

The win solidifies Phoenix’s standing as one of the league’s most consistent teams down the stretch. With their offense firing on all cylinders and Thomas continuing to make history, the Mercury are positioning themselves as a dangerous playoff opponent.

Meanwhile, the Sparks are left with little margin for error. Their playoff hopes now hinge on regrouping quickly and finding ways to close games against tough competition.
