Darrion Williams, who was this years Mountain West Freshman of the Year at Nevada announced that he is transferring to Texas Tech. He averaged 7.6 points, a team-high 7.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
Williams will be playing under first year Texas. Tech head coach Grant McCasland, who was hired away from North Texas this offseason. Grant McCasland replaces Mark Adams who resigned in March after referencing a Bible verse about “slaves serving their masters” when speaking to a player. McCasland posted a 135-65 record in six seasons at North Texas and led the Mean Green to the NIT title in 2023.
The Sacramento native moved to Las Vegas to play for Bishop Gorman High for his last two seasons of high school. Williams a breakout senior season saw him earn Nevada Gatorade player of the year honors. Nevada sign an letter of intent.
Williams told On3.com “Coach McCasland kept it real with me from the first time we talked.” “Plus being able to play with guys who are all about winning and trying to win championships is what I was looking for. There’s something special building in Lubbock and with the unbelievable fan support they got and the players I get to be alongside and learning from a great coaching staff, I’m excited to be a part of it.”
Derrion Williams will have three years of eligibility at Texas Tech and be allowed to play immediately.
