The Los Angeles Clippers looked ready to end their six-game losing streak Wednesday night at Intuit Dome. They built a 20-point lead and went into halftime ahead by 15, but Miami rallied for a 117-116 overtime win. Klay Thompson hit the game-winning three-pointer with one second left, extending the Clippers’ losing streak to seven games.
The key shift came after the Clippers’ 43-point second quarter. Los Angeles had moved the ball, created open shots and attacked before Miami could set its defense. As the Heat increased their pressure, the Clippers’ possessions became harder to finish and their turnovers gave Miami chances to climb back into the game.
Darius Garland led the Clippers with 26 points and seven assists. Rui Hachimura added 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while Brook Lopez had 20 points and eight rebounds. For Miami, Bam Adebayo finished with 35 points and 10 rebounds, Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Thompson had 30 points, including eight three-pointers.
The Clippers fell to 1-7, while the Heat improved to 3-5.
Both teams entered Wednesday’s matchup looking for a much-needed victory. Los Angeles had lost six straight, while Miami was coming off a 21-point defeat against the Lakers on Monday night in downtown Los Angeles.
The Heat took a 33-24 lead in the opening quarter, but the Clippers answered with their best stretch of the night. Los Angeles outscored Miami 43-19 in the second quarter and carried a 67-52 advantage into halftime. The Clippers opened the period with 10 unanswered points and put together a 26-2 run that turned a nine-point deficit into a commanding lead.
Los Angeles shot 72.7 percent from the field in the second quarter, making 16 of 22 attempts, including 8 of 13 from three-point range. The ball moved quickly, the Clippers found open perimeter shots and they attacked before Miami could organize its defense.
Hachimura scored from the perimeter and midrange, while Lopez gave Los Angeles another option near the basket and from outside. Rookie Keaton Wagler also helped build the lead with a three-pointer as the Clippers moved ahead 50-35. Los Angeles eventually went up 63-43, its largest lead of the game.
Miami responded after halftime with more urgency, and Adebayo became increasingly difficult to contain around the basket. Antetokounmpo also attacked more aggressively, putting pressure on the Clippers’ interior defense and creating scoring opportunities.
The Heat outscored Los Angeles 26-20 in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 87-78. The Clippers still had the advantage, but their offense no longer had the same rhythm. Miami’s pressure made it harder for Los Angeles to generate comfortable possessions and clean looks.
The Clippers maintained a double-digit lead during parts of the fourth quarter, including a 10-point advantage with about four and a half minutes remaining. Then Miami put together a 9-0 run. Adebayo and Antetokounmpo supplied the scoring, while the Clippers struggled to protect the ball and produce a steady response.
The difference from the second quarter was clear: Los Angeles had been making quick decisions and finding open shots; late in the game, Miami’s pressure disrupted that flow. The Clippers committed 18 turnovers, six more than the Heat, and Miami turned those mistakes into 23 points.
Hachimura made one of two free throws in the closing seconds to tie the game at 107. Adebayo missed a potential game-winning jumper at the buzzer, sending the teams to overtime.
Garland took over for Los Angeles in the extra period, scoring all nine of the Clippers’ points. His jumper broke a tie, and his floater gave the Clippers a 116-112 lead with 1:19 remaining.
Adebayo scored inside to pull Miami within two, and the Clippers did not score again. With Los Angeles leading 116-114 in the closing seconds, the Heat called timeout to set up their final possession. Antetokounmpo inbounded to Thompson, who came free in the left corner after Adebayo’s screen.
Thompson made the three-pointer with one second remaining. Kobe Sanders’ desperation attempt at the buzzer missed, and the Clippers left with another narrow defeat. Thompson finished 8-for-17 from three-point range.
After the game, Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue summed up the late-game problem: “We’re close, just not finishing the game.” He also pointed to fourth-quarter turnovers and the need to secure the ball, according to The Sporting Tribune. Those comments fit the sequence on the floor: Miami’s pressure disrupted the Clippers’ offense, and the resulting mistakes helped the Heat erase the lead.
Thompson said the winning shot “felt really good,” according to NBC Sports. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra credited Adebayo’s screen for helping free Thompson in the corner. The final possession showed Miami’s composure under pressure: the Heat created a clean look for one of the league’s most accomplished perimeter shooters when the game was on the line.
The Clippers shot 47.8 percent from the field, compared with Miami’s 43 percent, and made 16 three-pointers to the Heat’s 10. But Miami had a 23-13 edge in points off turnovers and outscored Los Angeles 54-40 in the paint. Those advantages helped the Heat overcome the Clippers’ strong shooting and halftime lead.
Los Angeles also got a 32-11 advantage in bench points, but it could not offset its late-game execution problems. The Clippers showed how effective they can be when the ball moves and the offense creates open shots. Their next step is sustaining that approach when opponents turn up the defensive pressure.
The Clippers will have another opportunity to end their losing streak when they host the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday at Intuit Dome.
