2028 Point Guard Justin Kimbrough Emerging as One of Arizona’s Top Rising Prospects

Mountain Pointe High School point guard Justin Kimbrough is quickly establishing himself as one of Arizona’s most intriguing young basketball prospects in the Class of 2028. Standing at 5-foot-9, Kimbrough may not have the size that immediately catches the attention of college recruiters, but his speed, basketball intelligence, scoring ability, and leadership on the floor make him a player worth watching.

The talented floor general, who also competes on the club basketball circuit with the Oakland Soldiers, continues to build his reputation as a dynamic playmaker capable of impacting the game in multiple ways.

Kimbrough is the definition of a true point guard. He understands how to control the tempo, create scoring opportunities for his teammates, and recognize when his team needs him to become more aggressive offensively. His ability to balance scoring and facilitating separates him from many young guards in his class.

One of the most impressive aspects of Kimbrough’s game is his exceptional quickness and ability to handle the basketball under pressure. His crafty ball-handling skills allow him to navigate through traffic, break down defenders off the dribble, and create separation for his jump shot. Whether attacking the basket or stopping on a dime for a pull-up jumper, Kimbrough consistently demonstrates the offensive versatility needed to keep defenders guessing.

Despite his smaller frame, Kimbrough plays with confidence and toughness. He does not shy away from challenging bigger defenders and has the creativity to finish plays or create scoring opportunities when driving into the paint.

His offensive game extends well beyond attacking the basket. Kimbrough possesses the ability to score at all three levels, displaying a smooth pull-up jumper from midrange and the confidence to knock down shots from beyond the three-point line. His shooting range forces defenders to respect him on the perimeter, opening driving lanes and creating additional opportunities for his teammates.

What makes Kimbrough particularly dangerous is his ability to shift gears offensively. He can accelerate past defenders with his first step, change direction without losing control, and create enough space to get off a quality shot. His turnaround jumper and midrange scoring package provide another dimension to an already polished offensive skill set.

However, Kimbrough’s greatest value may come from his ability to make everyone around him better.

He has excellent court vision and understands how to deliver accurate passes in both transition and halfcourt situations. His chemistry with his teammates is evident in his ability to anticipate their movements, find cutters approaching the basket, and deliver well-timed passes into tight windows.

Having watched Kimbrough in person, one of the things that stood out most was his ability to make the right pass at the right time. He consistently kept his head up, reading the floor and finding teammates before the defense could react. Whether pushing the pace in transition or operating in the halfcourt, his timing and decision-making as a passer allowed him to create quality scoring opportunities for those around him.

In the open court, Kimbrough is especially effective. His speed allows him to push the basketball before opposing defenses can get organized, while his awareness enables him to identify teammates running the floor. Whether delivering a perfectly placed lob in transition or finding an open shooter on the perimeter, he consistently creates opportunities that lead to high-percentage scoring chances.

His impact is not limited to the offensive end.

Kimbrough is also a tenacious perimeter defender who uses his quick hands, anticipation, and lateral movement to disrupt opposing ball handlers. His ability to read passing lanes and pressure opponents often results in steals that quickly turn into transition baskets.

Another area that stood out during live evaluation was his commitment to getting back on defense. Even after offensive possessions, Kimbrough consistently sprinted back, communicated with teammates, and worked to disrupt opposing guards. His effort level, combined with his quickness and instincts, helped him make a noticeable impact on that end of the floor.

During the 2025-26 5A Region season, Kimbrough ranked first in both assists and steals, demonstrating his ability to influence games without necessarily being the leading scorer. His impact extends beyond scoring, as he consistently creates opportunities for teammates while generating extra possessions on the defensive end. His defensive instincts, combined with his ability to initiate the fast break, make him an important contributor on both ends of the floor.

His impressive performance at the Arizona Fall Hidden20 Showcase, where he earned Co-MVP honors, further highlighted his ability to compete and stand out among talented prospects.

The recognition adds to a growing list of accomplishments for the Mountain Pointe standout, including earning First Team 5A All-Region honors in Arizona.

College programs have also begun taking notice.

Kimbrough has reportedly received scholarship offers from Bowling Green, Nevada, and Ole Miss, an encouraging development for a young prospect who still has significant time to develop before graduating in 2028.

Those early offers reflect the potential that college coaches see in his game. His ability to run an offense, create his own shot, defend with intensity, and make smart decisions with the basketball gives him a strong foundation as he continues progressing through his high school career.

There are still areas where Kimbrough can improve. At 5-foot-9, continuing to develop his strength, finishing ability against taller defenders, and consistency from the perimeter will be important as he faces bigger and more physically mature competition.

However, his size should not overshadow the qualities that make him such an intriguing prospect. His speed, confidence, competitiveness, and understanding of the point guard position give him the tools to succeed against high-level competition.

Playing with the Oakland Soldiers also provides Kimbrough with valuable exposure to talented players from across the country, giving him opportunities to test his abilities against strong competition while continuing to sharpen his overall game.

After evaluating Kimbrough in person, what stands out most is his command of the game. He operates with confidence, plays with pace, and understands how to impact winning beyond simply putting points on the scoreboard. His passing ability, defensive effort, and overall feel for the point guard position separate him from many players in his class.

He brings a combination of speed, creativity, defensive toughness, and offensive skill that makes him difficult to contain. More importantly, he understands the responsibilities of being a point guard and has the ability to elevate the players around him.

While some guards focus primarily on scoring, Kimbrough demonstrates that he can control a game through his passing, defensive pressure, and decision-making. When his team needs a basket, he has the offensive tools and confidence to create one.

His early college offers, individual recognition, and continued development suggest that his recruiting stock has plenty of room to rise.

As he gains experience, develops physically, and continues competing against elite competition, Kimbrough has an opportunity to establish himself among the premier point guards in Arizona and become a nationally recognized prospect in the Class of 2028.

For now, one thing is clear: Justin Kimbrough is a rising talent whose best basketball may still be ahead of him.
