When the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Meleek Thomas in the second round of the NBA Draft, many fans were curious about what kind of player they were getting. After watching his performance during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, it’s safe to say Cavaliers fans have plenty to be excited about.
Cleveland finished Summer League with a 3-2 record, closing out the week with an impressive 100-91 victory over the Chicago Bulls. While several young Cavaliers contributed throughout the tournament, no player made a bigger statement than rookie guard Meleek Thomas.
From the opening game, Thomas showed he belonged. He scored 20 points against the Indiana Pacers while adding five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Even though Cleveland came up short, Thomas refused to let the game slip away quietly. He erupted for 10 fourth-quarter points, helping the Cavaliers erase much of a double-digit deficit before Indiana held on for the win. That competitive fire immediately stood out.
If anyone thought that performance was a one-game surprise, Thomas quickly proved otherwise.
Against the Detroit Pistons, he exploded for 30 points while stuffing the stat sheet with seven assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Then he followed that performance with his most explosive outing of Summer League, pouring in 35 points during Cleveland’s dominant win over the Miami Heat. He knocked down five three-pointers, attacked the basket with confidence, and looked completely in control offensively.
After getting a game of rest while Cleveland defeated the New Orleans Pelicans, Thomas returned for the Summer League finale against Chicago. Despite missing his first four shots, he never lost confidence. Once he found his rhythm, he caught fire, finishing with 24 points while converting 10 of his final 16 shot attempts. Great scorers don’t allow slow starts to define their night, and Thomas showed exactly why coaches value that mentality.
What impressed me most wasn’t simply the scoring totals—it was how he scored.
Thomas consistently created separation off the dribble, attacked defenders without hesitation, and finished efficiently around the basket. He went a perfect 5-for-5 at the rim against Chicago, showing excellent body control and touch. Combined with his smooth outside shooting, he displayed the complete scoring package that every team looks for in a young guard.
Natural scorers have a unique feel for the game. They don’t force difficult shots. Instead, they read the defense, react to what they’re given, and get to their spots. Throughout Summer League, Thomas looked like one of those players. His offensive game appeared calm, patient, and under control.
There are still areas for growth. At this stage of his career, Thomas projects more as a scoring guard than a traditional playmaker. Running an offense and consistently creating opportunities for teammates will be one of the next steps in his development. Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman has already acknowledged that expanding Thomas’ playmaking ability will be a major focus moving forward.
The encouraging part is that those skills can be developed. What cannot be taught is the confidence, scoring instincts, and competitive mindset Thomas displayed throughout the week.
Summer League doesn’t guarantee NBA success, but it can reveal which young players are prepared to compete at the next level. Meleek Thomas looked ready for the challenge every time he stepped on the floor.
His role with Cleveland may be limited early in his rookie season, but if these performances are any indication, the Cavaliers may have found another young piece capable of making an impact sooner rather than later.
