Freshman phenom AJ Dybantsa made an electric debut for BYU, scoring 30 points in a thrilling 90–89 exhibition loss to Nebraska at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. The projected No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft wasted no time showing why scouts have been raving about him for years.
Dybantsa delivered a dazzling all-around performance, shooting 10-of-19 from the field, knocking down two three-pointers, and adding seven rebounds and three assists. Whether attacking off the dribble, finishing through contact, or finding open teammates, he looked every bit the part of a future NBA star.
“Draft him first right now,” BYU head coach Kevin Young said with a laugh after the game. “I mean, the guy didn’t miss a shot it seemed like.”
The 6-foot-9 forward played with the poise of a veteran, showing confidence in his shot selection and command of BYU’s offense. Even when Nebraska’s defense adjusted late in the second half, Dybantsa continued to make plays, hitting clutch buckets to keep the Cougars within striking distance.
While BYU ultimately fell short by a single point, Dybantsa’s debut was the story of the night. His ability to impact the game on both ends — scoring efficiently while also competing on the glass — gave fans a glimpse of what could be a special season ahead.
For a program entering a new era under Coach Young, Dybantsa’s presence is already changing expectations. If his first college performance was any indication, the Cougars may have one of the most exciting players in the country — and the NBA may already have its next top pick.
