The New York Liberty announced today that head coach Sandy Brondello’s contract will not be renewed for the 2026 WNBA season.
“We would like to thank Sandy Brondello for her everlasting impact on the New York Liberty,” said Jonathan Kolb, Liberty General Manager. “Sandy finishes her tenure in New York as the winningest coach in franchise history, and she took us to never-before-seen heights as the first head coach to lead the Liberty to a championship. We wish Sandy the very best in her next chapter.”
Brondello’s time in New York will be remembered as one of the most successful stretches in franchise history. She guided the Liberty to a WNBA Championship in 2024, the first in team history, and compiled a record of 107-53 over four seasons.
This past season, however, the Liberty struggled with injuries to stars Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu. Despite finishing as the No. 5 seed, New York was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Phoenix Mercury.
Brondello’s Legacy in New York
- First head coach to win a WNBA title with the Liberty (2024)
- Winningest coach in franchise history (107 wins)
- Built a championship-caliber roster around Stewart, Jones, and Ionescu
With Brondello’s departure, the Liberty front office now begins its search for the next head coach to lead the franchise forward. The decision not to renew Brondello’s contract marks the end of a transformative era for the Liberty, but the team remains focused on its long-term championship aspirations.
