Remembering Roy Beekman

Roy Beekman a former Mater Christi and Niagara University standout has transitioned. Roy grew up in the Queensbridge projects in Long Island City, Queens NY. 

Roy was Mater Christi’s first All-American player to ever come out of the program. He played for the legendary Jim Gatto. Roy was talented with the ball and became a prolific scorer. He was known as “Ice” and became first team All-City. Then he took his talents to Niagara in which he made a major contribution.

Roy gave back to the game in which he dedicated his time to the youth all over the New York City area. He coach at Aim High along with Kevin Jackson, Pierre Turner, and Vincent Smith. Then he was an assistant coach at Long Island University in Brooklyn under his former teammate and friend Ray Martin. 

After his stint at LIU he move on to be an assistant coach at Hostos Community College in the Bronx, New York under coach Bob Holford. Later on he became head coach for a few seasons at Hostos. Then he coach at Westbury and Nassau Community College.

Roy Beekman was a great supporter in the New York City basketball community and well loved and respected. He will be missed in the basketball community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and love ones. RIP Roy aka “Ice”
