James “True” Carter who grew up in the St. Alban’s area in Queens New York attended Hillcrest HS. He took his talents to St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkhill, New York. The 6-0 point guard became a standout at the NAIA school in which he helped carried the Spartans to the NAIA Nationals four consecutive seasons during his tenure.
Carter was known for making the key passes and also give you buckets as well. He would light it up in the New York summer and winter leagues playing for Bear Sterns and Primetime Roadrunners in which he would lead the team on assists and scoring as well.
After his time playing in various basketball leagues in the New York City area he played in Puerto Rico and begin an excellent career down there. He played with the Brujos de Guayama of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional. To this day he is the BSN all-time assists leader. During his 20-year career, he also played for the Indios de Mayagüez, Criollos de Caguas, Maratonistas de Coamo, and Capitanes de Arecibo.
In addition, the highlight of his career is that he was selected to the Puerto Rico National Team. He went up against the 1992 USA Olympic basketball team where he held his own against Michael Jordan in a qualifying matchup. In 1994, he helped Puerto Rico win a gold medal in the Goodwill games.
In 2006 he retired from the game and currently is involved with the community in Puerto Rico. We salute True for his contributions to the game in which he is a legend in Puerto Rico and New York City.
